Abstract
Within the caste of physicians and other health professionals
who serve the caste of workers,2 in ancient times
as now, there is a state of ethical disorder—acceptable
social disease—found but not tolerated outside the
caste in the greater society. Then as now, there has
been reaction within the caste, for reform of professional
practices, especially in research. Careful analyses
of actual distortions in the process of discovery, data
interpretation and presentation have been published,
on the basis of which a set of standards can be developed
for the proper conduct of epidemiologic and
